NASSNC issues two RN Action Agendas: Action #1 focuses on the expertise of school nurses that is grounded in preparation as registered nurses. Therefore, NASSNC charges school nurses to use the RN credential in all communications. Action #2 focuses on assisting school nurses in explaining school nursing to school administrators. School administrators are important education and community leaders who make policy and budget decisions. They should be fully informed about nursing credentials and services because there are legal ramifications regarding the scope and type of services provided to meet students’ health-related education needs.

The National Association of School Nurses has announced that Sharonlee Trefy was inducted as a 2023 Nursing Fellow of the National Academy of School Nursing at this year’s annual meeting. Sharonlee has been an active member of NASSNC for several years and has served NASSNC as President. “The honor of Fellow is the most prestigious recognition that members can receive from the National Association of School Nurses. It is a symbol of superior achievement in the school nursing professional and exceptional contributions to NASN and the profession of school nursing (NASN)”. Sharonlee retired as State School Nurse Consultant for Vermont in December 2022.

Emily Poland (Maine) is the recipient of the 2023 Outstanding State School Nurse Consultant Achievement Award! Emily will be presented with her award at the Summer NASSNC Membership meeting in Orlando, Florida on June 29, 2023. Emily will also be recognized as our award recipient at the National Association of School Nurses awards ceremony. Congratulations to Emily!

In a survey of nearly 8,000 school nurses, almost half (45%) reported symptoms of at least one adverse mental health condition in the two weeks prior to completing the survey in March 2022. The National Association of State School Nurse Consultants recognizes the impact of racism and white supremacy on children, youth, and families. The statement provides members with a clear statement of the association’s position and provides anti-racism resources and action steps to support opportunities in each state to improve outcomes for students and people of color. State and national government leaders should support the reallocation of resources to mitigate years of white privilege and racism’s impact on health and education. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are among our affirmed core values.
